CHECK OUT THIS POST I FOUND "WHAT IS RAW?" BY NERWIN.NET

So you just bought your first DSLR camera and now you have more buttons, dials menus, settings and you got to learn.  You understand ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, but what’s raw?  Mostly likely when you buy a DSLR or even some high end point and shoot cameras will have optional file formats likes, Jpeg, Jpeg Fine, Raw and Raw+Jpeg.  You are wondering what Raw is aren’t you?

Raw is uncompressed data, in camera terms its raw data right of from the image sensor.  When you shoot in jpeg format, the camera isn’t done after you take a photo, it compresses it and adds some simple edited tot he image.  Which in almost all cases jpeg format will be much shaper than Raw and that is because Raw files are Raw, you have to do the edited, there camera doesn’t nothing to it.
Alright, lets do a little comparison
Raw is…
  • not a image file, like it’s not a jpeg so windows natively will not open it, you need special software like Photoshop or Lightroom.
  • is a proprietary format, meaning Nikon and Canon use different format of Raw files.
  • uncompressed, like say if your camera is 10.1 megapixels, the file size is going to be 10megabytes (or at least around that anyways).
  • 8 bit per color, though most DSLR’s these days are 12 bits per color.
  • lossless data straight from the image sensor.
  • is normally higher in dynamic range, meaning the ability to display better looking shadows and highlights.
  • much lower in contrast, the photo will appear flat, washed out looking.
  • not as sharp as jpeg.
  • not very suitable to be printed with out post processing first.
Jpeg is…
  • a standard format readable by any image program or photo frame.
  • exactly 8 bits per color.
  • compressed data, which doesn’t always mean the photo will be low quality.
  • smaller file size
  • lower in dynamic range
  • much sharper
  • great for printing, sharing and posting on the web with out any further post processing
  • able to be manipulated, though not without losing data each time an edit is done.
  • processed by your camera, no need for manually processing, unless desired.
These are major differences, you shouldn’t shoot in raw all the time, and you shouldn’t shoot in jpeg all the time.  You should choose which format that depends on the situation, general photography will be just fine with jpeg, I shoot in jpeg most of the time because I had good luck getting excellent photos from using jpeg format, I also use jpeg when i’m at car shows and other events where I will be taking many pictures and not want to edit them.  Most journalist, press photographers use jpeg so they can instantly upload the photo of George Clooney right to web.
Now say if you want to setup a perfect shot, maybe an interior shot of a home, or maybe you want to do HDR (High Dynamic Range) you should use Raw format because it offers better dynamic range, it has more data and is lossless, so no matter how many times you save it, the data is always going to be there, it never gets lost, unlike jpeg.
Now for my personal experience, I hardly shoot in raw, I took many shots with raw and jpeg and of course the jpeg looks fine right of the camera, the raw is flat and washed out, but after the editing, the photos look just about the same, of course it really depends on the situation.  I actually know a lot of professional photographers that rarely shoot in raw nowadays. Which is partly because the technology is getting so much better that someday Raw format may never be used anymore, and that’s how it’s going to be.
I also tried doing an HDR shot with jpegs, came out like crap, did it with Raw and it came out perfect.  Raw and Jpeg are two different formats that will depend in your situation.  When you get your first DSLR, you wont be using raw format right of the bat, your going to being jpeg for a long time and you may never use raw, but you should at least try it and learn it.  It will come in handy someday to get the perfect. Remember chose raw or jpeg that is appropriate for your saturation.  Read more about Raw and Jpeg.

MY FIRST DVD COVER DEDICATED TO THE GREAT LATE NOTORIOUS B.I.G

WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL I HAD TO CREATE A DVD COVER FOR MY PORTFOLIO DVD. I ALWAYS LOVED THE ARTWORK OF THE READY TO DIE ALBUM COVER. I DID TRY TO MIMIC THE NAS "ILLMATIC" ALBUM BUT IT WASN'T RIGHT FOR ME. I COULDN'T ADD MY BUILDING WITH A CHILDHOOD PICTURE IN THE FRONT. SO IT WAS EASIER AND CLEANER TO RE EDIT THE READY TO DIE ALBUM REASON WHY THE COLORS WHERE TIMELESS (BLACK WITH RED FONTS AND WHITE BACKGROUND) AND IT DEPICTED A BABY SYMBOLIZING THE BIRTH OF SOMETHING NEW. I FELT LIKE IT WAS SOMETHING CHRISTOPHER WALLACE WANTED TO SHOW THAT HE WAS BORN TO DO THIS. SUCH A IRONIC TITLE THO "READY TO DIE" WITH A PICTURE OF A BABY. I NAMED MINE "UNDYING LOVE" TO SORT OF MATCH THE THEME BECAUSE REGARDLESS OF DEATH I LOVE TO DO WHAT I DO, SO IT'S UNDYING TO ME. SO I HAD TO PAY MY RESPECT TOWARDS THE ARTIST WHO MADE THIS CLASSIC ALBUM COVER AND ONE OF THE GREATEST NOTORIOUS B.I.G
I TRIED TO GET SOME INFO OF THE DESIGNER OR ART PROCESS IN THE MAKING OF THE COVER BUT GUESS GOOGLE DIDN'T COME THRU.
The album was released with a cover depicting an infant resembling the artist, though sporting an afro, which pertains to the album's concept of the artist's life from birth, to his death. It has been listed as among the best album covers in hip hop.[4] Rappers Raekwon and Ghostface Killah however, would imply disdainfully on Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... (Loud, 1995) that this cover concept was first used by Nas on his debut album Illmatic.[5]

5D Mark II EOS MOVIE firmware update due soon

Canon has announced it will release a firmware update (Version 2.0.3) for the EOS 5D Mark II DSLR that will add 24 and 25fps recording to the EOS MOVIE video functions, plus a range of other video shooting enhancements. This firmware will be available as a free download in mid-March 2010.
The firmware update was developed in response to feedback from photographers and cinematographers and further enhances the video performance of the EOS 5D Mark II. The addition of new frame rates expands the video potential of the camera, providing filmmakers with the ability to shoot 1080p Full HD footage at 24fps (actual 23.976fps) – the optimum frame rate for cinematic video. 25fps support at both 1920x1080 and 640x480 resolutions will allow users to film at the frame rate required for the PAL broadcast standard, while the new firmware will also change the 30fps option to the NTSC video standard of 29.97fps.

The firmware goes beyond frame rates and will also deliver a new histogram display for shooting movies in manual exposure, shutter-priority (Tv) and aperture-priority (Av), and exposure modes will also be available in movie mode. Improved audio functionality will allow users to set sound record levels manually using a sound-level meter displayed on the LCD screen. The audio sampling frequency has also been increased from 44.1KHz to 48KHz, providing the optimum audio signal typically required for professional or broadcast material.
Launched in September 2008 the EOS 5D Mark II DSLR has a full frame CMOS sensor and compatibility with the wide range of Canon EF lenses, including the L-series lenses. After its launch the EOS 5D Mark II quickly established a reputation amongst filmmakers for its outstanding HD video performance and flexibility of use. The camera immediately created a wide range of new possibilities for photographers and videographers, and the addition of new frame rates and manual audio levels extends those possibilities even further – allowing movie makers to shoot stunning movies to suit practically any creative purpose.

The extreme sports photographer and filmmaker Richard Walch was one of the first people to shoot with the EOS 5D Mark II with the updated firmware and he has produced the stunning snowboarding movie ‘I Love My Friends’ from a 25fps shoot in Laax, Switzerland.
Walch commented: “The addition of the new frame rates opens up a whole new range of possibilities. If you’re a cinematographer, independent filmmaker or just enthusiastic about making your own movies, get out there and give it a try.” You can view ‘I Love My Friends’ shot by Richard Walch on the EOS 5D Mark II with the new firmware here at CPN along with a special ‘behind the scenes’ video in which Richard Walch explains how he shot the movie.
The EOS 5D Mark II EOS MOVIE firmware will be available to download from mid-March from the usual Canon EOS firmware downloads website. Look out for further details on the CPN website about the exact availability of this firmware.
